Tutoring Center
Jackson College is committed to student success and offers all its students free academic tutoring at various college locations in friendly, supportive environments. The goal of tutoring is to provide individualized or group assistance that enables you to develop academic mastery and independence.
Tutoring
The CSS has many tutoring options available for students. There are faculty tutors and student tutors who serve students in the CSS for in person tutoring during our open hours.
Our tutoring center is open Monday through Thursday from 9am to 6pm for in person appointments and drop-in tutoring.
The CSS also has online tutoring appointments during open hours, after hours, and weekends. Our virtual appointments will be held through Big Blue Button or Zoom. Tutors may offer help with Canvas, homework and study support.
Writing Center
The CSS faculty writing tutors are here to serve you! Meetings can be held either in person or via Zoom.
As tutors, we use a Socratic Questioning process, which guides and inspires you while writing and revising your papers. We will be reviewing the papers together with you. Please note that we can work with all disciplines where papers are required, and this includes English language learners.
Need help? See our appointment hours and contact information below. You can make a virtual or in person appointment with any of the writing faculty. We are also available for drop-in tutoring at the CSS during our open hours: Monday through Thursday 9am to 6pm. Reminder: A copy of the assignment, along with a grading rubric, and any other documents would help us help you.
Together, we will make this work!

Virginia Imperial
Hello students! I am Virginia Imperial, an Adjunct Instructor at Jackson College since 2008 and a Writing Lab tutor since 2010. I look forward to getting to know you and encouraging you to take ownership of your writing, mindful that my colleagues and I all work to support your professor’s course requirements. Specifically, I will ask questions to help you clarify your ideas and strengthen certain areas such as thesis development, organization, and structure. Each of you is unique, possessing inherent dignity; therefore, I strive to make this philosophy of teaching visible with every encounter. I am excited to meet you and show you that writing is a skill you can enjoy and use throughout your life. Welcome to the Center for Student Success!

Sandy Schultz
Hi! My name is Sandra Schultz, and I am an alumnus of California State University Long Beach, where I graduated with by BA and MA in English.
As a life-long writer, learning and teaching how to successfully communicate through writing resonates deeply inside of me. The importance of effective writing cannot be underestimated. Teaching students how to write as a communication tool greatly contributes to their success as a student. Not only are they learning to write papers for classes, but they are learning how to express their needs, desires, ideas, opinions, and wisdom. They can take this tool out into their world to better their relationships, to navigate their path towards their goals, and to participate more fully as a social being.
First and foremost, I work to create an environment within which the student will feel safe, welcomed, and respected. I consider each student as an individual with unique learning styles, and in the best scenario, I will also learn from them. I present content in the most efficient way that I can, striving for clarity and cohesion, so that no student who is willing and able to learn will be left behind. I make myself available to answer questions, clear confusion, and help students to discover and strengthen their unique voice.
Teaching and tutoring are my passion! I look forward to meeting you and helping you in any way I can. You can schedule a tutoring session with me below or contact me by e-mail .
Teri Utz
Hi! My name is Teri Utz. I am new to the Center for Student Success, but I have been teaching English and writing since graduating from Ohio University with my BSEd in English.
After graduation, I moved to South Korea and taught English as a Foreign Language and English Language Arts to international students living there. When I returned to the United States, I continued teaching English at a variety of levels until graduating with my MA in TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) and Intercultural Studies from Wheaton College.
My goal in tutoring writing here at the CSS is to work with students to make assignments clear and the completion of them manageable and less overwhelming. I am glad for this opportunity to tutor and get better acquainted with our students here at Jackson College!
I look forward to helping you experience success and satisfaction in your work. You can schedule a tutoring session with me below or contact me by e-mail .
Supplemental Instruction
Our Supplemental Instruction (SI) is an academic assistance program that uses peer-assisted study sessions with SI Leaders. SI leaders are students who are independent learners who have successfully navigated their courses and are prepared to share what they have learned. Sessions are regularly scheduled, informal review sessions in which students compare notes, discuss readings, develop organizational tools, and predict test items. Students learn how to integrate course content and study skills while working together.
At each session, you will be guided through this material by your SI leader. They know the course content and are anxious to help guide you through it. They’ll be in class with you every day, hearing what you hear. What they won’t do is lecture; their job is to help you think about the lectures and practice techniques, and then put it all together during the SI sessions.
